Internet Girl’s new EP ROLE MODEL is exemplary of how well vocalist Ntstika "TK" Bungane’s crass and confrontational songwriting gels with Matthew "Neese" Burgess (drums) and James "Griggs" Smith’s (guitar) crisp production, and the result is a project that stands as their most cohesive and authentic. “Previous projects that we’ve done were a little bit more poppy, a little more soft, and it just never translated with us fully,” vocalist TK tells Apple Music. “Even though it was what we were trying to do at the time. It was what the artists we were f**king with were doing at the time.” On this EP, the trio sheds their hyperpop skin, embodying an in-your-face sound and persona that they’ve cultivated courtesy of their frenzied live shows, and the anti-hero theme that’s imbued into these six gritty tracks. “COKEHEAD” [Internet Girl & Ezekiel Griggs: “So the track list was based on the order of the releases, and we wanted it to be the first release because it's so attention grabbing. It's really in your face.” Neese: “The visual rollout was a major player in the order. So “COKEHEAD” starts with us at a show. If you've seen the visual rollout, how we did it, we were in the car, we were talking, we were getting ready for a show. And then naturally if we're going to play a show, I think the most hyped song to kick it off would be ‘COKEHEAD.’” “EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF” [Internet Girl & re6ce Neese: “Our whole team is overseas, our label is overseas, our management's overseas, so this side actually really is every man for himself. The first show we ever played, we had to organize it ourselves. We put it on ourselves. In terms of the process of the track, I think TK started it with just a guitar and vocal.” TK: “The first three songs I started at the crib. I got back from work really vexed, and just put it into a song, and then sent it to the boys, and then they f**ked with it big time. And it was at a point as well where the boys needed me to improve, and a part of that was learning how to just put a drum line together, recording the guitar and just getting a proper song together that the boys can work with, making their job a little bit easier.” “KIDS” [Internet Girl, 4TUNAT & Godly the Ruler TK: “This track is dope because Matt really started that process. He was like, ‘We need to just change the vibe. We're sounding like a cover band of ourselves now. Let's switch up the vibe.’ And he made the beat right in front of us and we recorded it. We finished the first half of the song in an hour and a half, or something. And it was all just Matt being like, ‘We need to try something new for the tape. We need to add different sonics to the tape so that it doesn't just sound like drums and a bassline.’” “ROLE MODEL” [Internet Girl & Master Peace TK: “We got to a point where we were like, we just want to make harder shit. We just want to be viewed as cool more than anything else, and that's where ‘ROLE MODEL’ stems from. I was working a nine-to-five back then, and I remember just getting back home and being like, I want to be cool and this is it, and that same day we wrote the song ‘ROLE MODEL.’ Yeah, that's kind of where it birthed from—just yearning to be cool.” “GOVERNMENT NAME” TK: “This track is essentially a song about how I felt like people were getting too used to me. Being in Cape Town, it's a very small town and it's easy to get used to someone, and I just felt like people were just getting too cosy with me, asking for favors. So it’s very similar to ‘EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF’ because I was just as vexed about the people around me.” “FIGURE IT OUT” [Internet Girl & 4TUNAT TK: “‘Figure It Out’ is kind of like the swan song of everything. In terms of the beats, we wanted to make something sonically similar to “Kids.” Just a little bit cooler—a pure punk song. And then it's kind of just crescendoing everything. Again, the name ‘FIGURE IT OUT’ is apt because we kind of just talk about how we just figured it out and we talk about the past and how [things were a little bit messy but now it’s going to work out. I doubled down on that arrogance and being like, we're the s**t, yeah, s**t’s just popping off now! And then there's a really cool voice note at the end, of the boys talking about and reflecting on their journey.”
